What kind of art do people buy?

I don't actually like answering this question, but it is a frequently asked question so here goes. Traditional landscapes are the most popular style of art, portraits are also a big seller, but if that isn't your style, don't attempt to be all things to all people. People buy good art of all types and yes, a lot has to do with marketing and being willing to spend some money on yourself - on your art career.

Here's the most important thing, you absolutely must limit yourself to what you do best in order to make a name for yourself. If you're all over the place with your art you will never become well known.

"Well, someone might like it." I've heard that more than once, but if you know that a certain piece isn't the best you can do, paint over it, or throw it away, don't show it.

Interesting shapes are a good idea, very long and vertical or horizontal (14"x60") perfect squares work well especially if they are small enough to work in groupings (24"x24") Think about color; Deep green, true red, sunset colors, white, and all neutrals will find homes faster than blues, blacks, purples, and very feminine colors like pink, lavender, and baby yellow. Don't over do it with foils and gold leafing, a little bit of gold or copper goes a long way.
